Our Mission in Queensland

Expanding to Queensland, our sisters focused on local needs, bridging cultural gaps and providing spiritual and practical support to remote communities. This period was defined by an intimate connection with the local environment and the unique challenges of the Australian bush.

Fantome Island

One of our most challenging and transformative missions was on Fantome Island, serving the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by leprosy. Our sisters shared in their lives, providing medical care and a dignified presence until the closure of the lazaret.

Our Mission Today

Today, our presence in Australia continues to evolve. We remain committed to prayerful community life and active service, adapting to the shifts of a fragmented world while maintaining our core identity as Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.

A Continuing Mission

Our journey is far from over. With every sunrise over the Australian horizon, we renew our pledge to be a humanizing presence for peace, justice, and the care of creation.

FMM in Australia

The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary have a long and storied history in Australia, beginning with our arrival in 1943. From the tropical reaches of Queensland to the heart of our nation's capital, our sisters have dedicated themselves to serving those on the margins with dignity, love, and unwavering faith.

Our Arrival in Australia

In 1943, during the height of World War II, the first Franciscan Missionaries of Mary arrived in Australia. They were women of deep courage, stepping into a new land to offer presence and prayer amidst a world in turmoil. Their arrival marked the beginning of a legacy built on humanizing presence and service.

Education and Care

Our commitment to the next generation grew through schools and early childhood centers, fostering values of peace and justice in young hearts across Australia.

Our Lady of Consolation

We extended our reach to healthcare and elderly care, creating sanctuaries for healing and dignified aging where the face of Christ is revealed through compassion.

Marymead

Through Marymead in Canberra, we have supported children and families in need, ensuring every individual feels the healing presence of a supportive community.
