FMM in Japan

In 1898, responding to the call of Father Jean-Marie Collet of the Paris Mission, who was serving people suffering from Hansen's disease in Kumamoto, the foundress Mary of the Passion sent five sisters to Japan. To serve the great hope for communion sown by God in the hearts of people throughout the world, we desire to “be present” amongst them.

Now we are 150 sisters in Japan. visit us - https://www.fmm.jp

Our Arrival in Japan

The story of FMM in Japan began with a courageous step into the unknown. Our pioneers encountered a culture rich in tradition and beauty, finding common ground in the universal language of care. Despite early challenges, they established a foundation built on mutual respect and a tireless desire to serve where need was greatest.

Our Mission in Kumamoto

In Kumamoto, the FMM sisters rooted their mission in the local community. They recognized the urgent need for maternal care and leprosy support, transforming social stigmas into spaces of dignity and healing. The Kumamoto mission became a beacon of hope, demonstrating the Franciscan spirit of closeness to those on the margins.
